Carbon Visuals’ real time video of the Carbon Emissions of New York City has won an award from the American Clean Skies Foundation at the Energy Visions Prize gala, earning a place on the podium in the short film category and $20,000.
The prize judges said its graphic representation of one-ton spheres of Carbon Dioxide Gas blanketing NYC was unique and compelling.
In a press release from the American Clean Skies Foundation the CEO Gregory C. Staple said “The intent of the Energy Visions Prize is to honour the people who are on the cutting edge of media and technology innovation when it comes to promoting or featuring cleaner electricity and fuel.”
In addition to the Energy Vision Prize, the video has received international attention with audiences, with powerful and clear visuals showing the emissions of New York City over an hour, a day and a year. It was produced with consultants Power Angels and commissioned by the Environmental Defense Fund (USA) who work around the world to advance energy efficiency and clean energy measures.
Carbon Visuals CEO Antony Turner who attended the awards ceremony in Washington DC commented: “It’s great to get this award. The response to our work from everyone I have met in the USA has been fantastic and very encouraging. We will continue to find ways to help people make sense of the carbon / climate challenge.”
To date the New York City video has received over 220,000 views on YouTube and encouraged debate across social media. As well as providing insight and visuals for a number of international print publications, it has been embedded and discussed through over 35 online blogs and media sites including New Scientist, Scientific America, Huffington Post, Mashables and the Mail Online.
Continuing its work to help people see the reality behind carbon data, a video for another North American city is due in the next few months. Watch this space.
